Other IOA Individual Benefits

The horrible truth about becoming disabled is that every single aspect—from the simplest task to things you couldn’t begin to imagine—change. And the change usually comes in the form of not being able to do any of the same things you used to. Disability insurance pays an insured person an income when that person is unable to work because of an accident or illness.

Short-Term Disability

This type of coverage applies when an injury or illness that keeps a person from working for a short time. The definition of short-term disability (and the time period over which coverage extends) differs among insurance companies and employers. Short-term disability insurance coverage is designed to protect an individual's wages during a time of injury or illness (that is not work-related) that would prohibit the individual from working.

Short-Term Medical

This policy provides temporary coverage for an individual for a short period of time, usually from 30 days to six months.

Long-Term Disability

A group or individual policy which provides coverage for longer than a short term, often until the insured reaches age 65 in the case of illness and for the remainder of his lifetime in the case of accident.

Long-Term Care

This policy provides care which is provided for persons with chronic diseases or disabilities. The term includes a wide range of health and social services provided under the supervision of medical professionals. Because of old age, mental or physical illness, or injury, some people find themselves in need of help with eating, bathing, dressing and other physical activities. Long-term care insurance can help pay for such care in the future, in the event you are faced with the need for such assistance.
